What 1:1 Coaching with a Running Coach Actually Looks Like
One of the questions I get asked most often is: “So… how does your coaching actually work?”
I get it — hiring a coach can feel like a big step. I still remember when I first started running: I was excited but had no clue what I was doing, and I often wished I had someone to guide me. That’s why I’ve built my coaching the way I have — to make it clear, supportive, and personal. My goal is to meet you where you are, help you challenge yourself, and make sure the process is not only effective, but enjoyable.
Below, I’ve answered the most common questions I get about my 1-1 coaching program so you know exactly what to expect.

How does it all work?
Great question! Here’s the simple process:
- Fill out an application form – this helps me learn more about you and your goals.
- Optional call – we may hop on a call (your choice!) to see if we’re a good fit.
- If it’s a fit – I’ll send over the contract, set up payment, and give you an in-depth questionnaire to understand where you’re at right now (training, lifestyle, injuries, nutrition, mindset, etc.).
- First call – if your package includes coaching calls, I’ll reach out to schedule our first one so we can dive deeper into your goals and start building your personalized plan.
- Training begins – you’ll get access to your customized program in Final Surge, and we’ll work together to make sure you’re progressing safely and sustainably.
How is this different from a free plan or an app?
Free plans and apps (like Nike Run Club or Runna) give you a generic schedule — but they can’t adapt when life happens.
With 1-1 coaching:
- Got a big hike coming up? I’ll shift your runs.
- Workouts feeling too easy or too tough? I’ll adjust them.
- Something sore or life gets busy? We’ll modify so you can stay consistent and avoid injury.
Apps can’t talk to you when you’re stressed, tired, or motivated to push harder — but I can. Coaching is about real-time adjustments, accountability, and making running something you actually enjoy sticking with.
↑ Back to topWill I really get personalized coaching?
Yes — 100%. Your plan is designed for you:
- Your current fitness level
- Your running history and injury background
- Your schedule and lifestyle demands
- Your specific goals (from finishing a 5K to chasing a BQ)
It’s not “one-size-fits-all.” It’s built around your life so you can train consistently and see what your body is capable of.
↑ Back to topHow do I follow the workouts?
Everything is delivered through Final Surge, a professional online training platform.
- Your workouts are loaded into your personal calendar
- They sync directly to your Garmin or smartwatch so there’s no guesswork
- After each run, your stats sync back so I can review your progress and make adjustments as needed
No PDFs, no scrolling through documents — just clear, simple, personalized training.
↑ Back to topWhat if I fall behind or miss a week?
Totally normal — and this is where 1-1 coaching shines. Instead of feeling like you “failed” a plan, we’ll adjust together. Whether you’re traveling, sick, or just slammed at work, I’ll help you pivot your training so you stay on track long-term.
↑ Back to topHow does the strength training work?
Strength training is included, and it’s a critical part of your running plan.
- Programs are tailored to your equipment (home or gym) and time available
- Sessions are designed to make you a stronger, more durable runner — not take away from your running
- You’ll get exercise demos, sets, and reps so you know exactly what to do
If something doesn’t feel right or you don’t have the equipment, I’ll provide alternatives.
↑ Back to topWho is the best fit for this program?
My best-fit clients are runners who:
- Love to challenge themselves and see what their body can do
- Want to chase big goals but also want to train smart, without constant injuries or burnout
- Value accountability and flexibility so training fits into their busy lives
- Want a coach who listens, adapts, and keeps the process enjoyable
Whether you’re a brand-new runner or chasing a major PR, if you love the challenge of running, this program is designed for you.
